25 Worst Passwords of 2011 Revealed

If you see your password below, STOP!

Do not finish reading this post and immediately go change your password -- before you forget. You will probably make changes in several places since passwords tend to be reused for multiple accounts.

Here are two lists, the first compiled by SplashData:

1. password

2. 123456

3.12345678

4. qwerty

5. abc123

6. monkey

7. 1234567

8. letmein

9. trustno1

10. dragon

11. baseball

12. 111111

13. iloveyou

14. master

15. sunshine

16. ashley

17. bailey

18. passw0rd

19. shadow

20. 123123

21. 654321

22. superman

23. qazwsx

24. michael

25. football

Last year, Imperva looked at 32 million passwords stolen from RockYou, a hacked website, and released its own Top 10 "worst" list:

1. 123456

2. 12345

3. 123456789

4. Password

5. iloveyou

6. princess

7. rockyou

8. 1234567

9. 12345678

10. abc123

If you've gotten this far and don't see any of your passwords, that's good news. But, note that complex passwords combining letters and numbers, such as passw0rd (with the "o" replaced by a zero) are starting to get onto the 2011 list. abc123 is a mixed password that showed up on both lists.

Last year, Imperva provided a list of password best practices, created by NASA to help its users protect their rocket science, they include:

It should contain at least eight characters

It should contain a mix of four different types of characters - upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers, and special characters such as !@#$%^&*,;" If there is only one letter or special character, it should not be either the first or last character in the password.

It should not be a name, a slang word, or any word in the dictionary. It should not include any part of your name or your e-mail address.

Following that advice, of course, means you'll create a password that will be impossible, unless you try a trick credited to security guru Bruce Schneir: Turn a sentence into a password.

For example, "Now I lay me down to sleep" might become nilmDOWN2s, a 10-character password that won't be found in any dictionary.

Can't remember that password? Schneir says it's OK to write it down and put it in your wallet, or better yet keep a hint in your wallet. Just don't also include a list of the sites and services that password works with. Try to use a different password on every service, but if you can't do that, at least develop a set of passwords that you use at different sites.

Someday, we will use authentication schemes, perhaps biometrics, that don't require so much jumping through hoops to protect our data. But, in the meantime, passwords are all most of us have, so they ought to be strong enough to do the job.

AT&T Raises Subsidized iPhone 3GS Price to $0.99

Along with the iPhone 4S unveiling in October, Apple also announced a new price for the iPhone 3GS; free with a two-year contract from AT&T. Smart move because this shows that Apple is taking on the lower-end Android handset market head-on.

Now, AT&T has raised the price of the iPhone 3GS smartphone to $0.99. Not a very smart move. One possible explanation for this decision comes from an AT&T employee, according to MacRumors:

I work at AT&T, this is being done to help prevent fraud as the 99 cents cannot be billed to your bill. It must be charged to a credit or bank issued debt card. Fraudsters are using stolen identities to steal these handsets been an issue since they went free.

In fact, the two-year old iPhone 3GS has been second-best selling smartphone in the U.S. during the third quarter of this year, behind only its successor, the iPhone 4. I don’t understand how this is possible if Android is “winning”. Also, it should be noted that the iPhone 3GS is available for $0 with a two year contract at Apple Stores, Wal Marts, Best Buys, Radio Shacks, Targets, etc.

Bottom line is that over four years after the original iPhone, AT&T is still stupid. I still don’t see the need for a price raise.

U.S. Carriers Still Struggling to Meet iPhone 4S Demand

Everyone knows by now that Apple recently released the iPhone 4S, but how well is the doomed phone exactly selling? Let’s take a look. A few days after, Reuters reported that AT&T is seeing an ”extraordinary demand” for the new iPhone 4S, which became available for preorder at 12:01 am Pacific time on Friday, October 7th. AT&T revealed that they have seen over 200,000 preorders for the iPhone 4S in the first 12 hours of sale. Pretty impressive for a “non-iPhone 5″

Then, just 24 hours after pre-orders started for the iPhone 4S, Apple pushed back expected shipping times for the device from expected delivery on October 14th to an estimate of 1-2 weeks. Just days after, Apple announced that the iPhone 4S sold one million preorders in its first 24 hours of availability, setting a new record for the company. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports that Verizon Wireless customers still need to wait for more than three weeks for their purchase to arrive. It’s an average 21-day wait at AT&T as well, whereas Sprint customers must wait up to 14 days. Hey! Wait a minute! What happened to “nobody wants this iPhone” nonsense? You know how insane that is? (in a good way). Just imagine what the demand will be like beginning next week since it is holiday season.

Verizon Wireless customers may have to wait more than three weeks for the device, according to the carrier’s website. That compares with as much as 21 days at AT&T and up to 14 days at Sprint Nextel. While some tech blogs have suggested Apple’s manufacturing isn’t keeping pace, the carriers point to unexpectedly strong demand for the handset.

“We are having some supply issues in the sense that demand’s huge,” AT&T’s president of emerging devices, Glenn Lurie, said Wednesday. “We have had just record-breaking sales on it.”

In fact, when was the last time you read an article about an Android phone’s demand? We read about the iPhone’s demand all the time, but never about an Android phone’s. How can that be possible if Android is “winning”?

Apple TV Software Update 4.4.3 Released

Apple has ben releasing software updates for its Apple TV quite frequently. It seems that every few months there is a new software update released for the Apple TV, which is interesting because the Apple TV is just a “hobby” for Apple. Not trying to speculate anything, but it is something to be on the lookout for.

In August, the company released a new iOS software update for the second-generation Apple TV. The update brought  support for several new features including streaming access to purchased TV shows and support. Today, the company has released 4.3.3 for Apple TV, which is labeled build 9A4051, and can now be downloaded directly from the device. This is a minor update, fixing issues in the Apple TV version 4.4 software update.

Version 4.4.3 is third update to have arrived since the release of 4.4, which added AirPlay Mirroring support, Wall Street Journal Live, National Hockey League Content, Photo Stream, and iTunes Trailers.  Apple has not revealed details for the 4.3.3 software update, secretive, indeed.

Apple: Worldwide Black Friday Sale

Oh hey! The holiday season is just about to get started and deals are being announced on a daily basis. Hot off the press today, Apple has begun putting teaser pages on its online stores for a “one -day shopping event” that will take place around the world this Friday.

Apple has been offering a sale on Black Friday for a while now and they are continuing the tradition this year. Speaking of sales, when was the last time Google offered a sale on Black Friday? The company has not revealed what items will be on sale this Friday. Black Friday occurs on the last Friday of November and is usually the biggest shopping day of the year in the U.S.

Going by their teaser page, it seems that  customers will discover “amazing iPad, iPod and Mac gifts” during the one-day event. MacStories reports that the teaser page has appeared on a number of Apple’s international online stores, including Australia, Italy and U.K., and the U.S. store is expected to receive its own banner within hours.

The special one-day Apple shopping event. This Friday, November 25.

Mark your calendar now, and come back to the Apple Online Store for the special one-day event. You’ll discover amazing iPad, iPod and Mac gifts for everyone on your list.

MacRumors reports that “Apple’s discounts are typically relatively small compared to other retailers.” In addition, last year, Apple offered $101 discounts on their iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air lines, with $11-$41 discounts on the iPods and iPads.

So folks, mark your calendar for the 25th! :-)

Samsung Galaxy S II Ad Mimics iPhone Line-waiters

As if patent lawsuits weren’t enough for copy-cat Samsung, now they have started to mimic iPhone line waiters. I really don’t understand how a company is supposed to win existing iPhone customers overs by insulting Apple product owners, but OK. Today, a new television ad by Samsung demonstrates its on-going rivalry with Apple by taking a swing at customers waiting in line for the iPhone. To me, this seems like a sign of jealousy. Why? Because nobody ever waits in line for a Samsung phone. In fact, when was the last time Apple insulted any of its customers during an iPhone ad? If you answered never, that’s correct.

According to Mashable, Samsung’s Galaxy S II smartphone commercial was set to debut on Facebook on Tuesday and begin airing on TV on Thanksgiving. The ad starts off by showing groups of people  waiting in line in major cities across the U.S. in an obvious reference to the crowds that Apple traditionally draws to its iPhone product launches. Samsung also takes a stab at battery problems with the iPhone 4S. HA! Who are they kidding? Android has had power management problems since day one, but have they ever mentioned that? Nope. In addition, Apple has already fixed the battery life issue. What’s really shameful is that Samsung does not mention the drawbacks of their phone. Unlike Apple, unfortunately, they continue to lie. For example, Samsung does not mention your phone may never receive an update. In an iPhone commercial, Apple demonstrates the true iPhone experience.

The commercial also demonstrated a complaint that appeared after the iPhone 4S was unveiled. ”If it looks the same, how will people know I upgraded?” a line-waiter asked. Why, yes, Samsung! That would explain why they are selling like hotcakes. The company ends the ad by boasting about the screen size and 4G capabilities. Once again, the lack of those two features in the iPhone 4S would explain why the iPhone 4S is selling like hotcakes, right? Samsung’s ad concluded with the tagline: “The next big thing is already here.” That’s what…uhh, never-mind.

Facebook Porn Attack Caused By Browser Vulnerability

Recently we reported about the Facebook spam attack that posted porn contents on the users’ wall without their knowledge. There is no information regarding who was behind this attack, however, all fingers are being pointed out towards the hacktivist group Anonymous.

Now, Facebook acknowledges that the latest spam attack was a result of a browser, and not the hacker group Anonymous. It was said that the people behind the attack exploited a browser vulnerability that allows “self-XSS”. XSS is shorthand in security circles for cross-site scripting.Facebook Security

Cross-site scripting enables hackers and scammers to execute a JavaScript code in your browser that can access and take full control of the website you are interacting with, which in this case is Facebook. The Facebook team states that users were tricked to copy-paste malicious JavaScript code into their browser, which triggered the script to automatically post such content on their wall.

Scammers generally trick users by hiding the “like” button behind an image, such as a picture of an embedded YouTube video with a play button. However, the latest attack was conducted using a different method that many users are not familiar with – self-inflicted JavaScript injection. The mechanism and how the process was carried out has been explained by Zscaler ThreatLabZ Senior Security Researcher Mike Geide.

Here’s the latest statement issued by Facebook on the spam attack -

“Protecting the people who use Facebook from spam and malicious content is a top priority for us, and we are always working to improve our systems to isolate and remove material that violates our terms. Recently, we experienced a coordinated spam attack that exploited a browser vulnerability. Our efforts have drastically limited the damage caused by this attack, and we are now in the process of investigating to identify those responsible.

During this spam attack users were tricked into pasting and executing malicious javascript in their browser URL bar causing them to unknowingly share this offensive content. Our engineers have been working diligently on this self-XSS vulnerability in the browser. We’ve built enforcement mechanisms to quickly shut down the malicious Pages and accounts that attempt to exploit it. We have also been putting those affected through educational checkpoints so they know how to protect themselves. We’ve put in place backend measures to reduce the rate of these attacks and will continue to iterate on our defenses to find new ways to protect people.”

Please make sure that you DO NOT blindly click on any links that are shared on Facebook. This also applies to the links that are shared by your friend whom you trust the most. As a precautionary measure, always check which applications you use and remove unwanted or suspicious ones. If you aren’t sure how to do it, you can always check our guide on removing apps from Facebook. Porn Content on Your Facebook News Feed

An increasing number of users on Facebook are reporting that their news feed has been flooded with pornography and explicit content, and rumours indicate that the Anonymous hacktivist and its rumoured Fawkes virus could be responsible for this barrage of offensive images.

The spread of such content started a few days ago, and now has become viral across the social network, making its users angry and disgusted. It’s not just the general users who have been affected by this bombardment, but celebrities like actress and director, Courtney Zito as well. She told The Christian Post, “I have 5000 friends. My feed is littered with porn. I can’t even check my news feed with anyone around because of it.”

All Facebook notes that this isn’t the first time Facebook is being affected by such a thing. A similar exploit happened last year in August 2010, where photos were being shared across users’ wall without their knowledge.

I haven’t noticed anything as such on my Timeline or have heard of any complaints from my friends. However, searching on Twitter for the term “facebook porn” shows a list of complaints from users who have been affected. They are also indicating that they will be temporarily deactivating their account until the issue has been resolved.

Facebook is yet to issue a statement about this exploit. Although all fingers are pointing out to Anonymous, it is still unclear on who is behind this attack. The reason why Anonymous is put at blame is because the hacktivist made threats against the social networking giant in August since it lacked privacy that users want on it. The group indicated that they would “kill” Facebook on November 5, but there wasn’t any such activity that took place that day.

Recently we posted about a scam that has been spreading on Facebook – “98 Percent of People Can’t Watch This Video for More Than 15 Seconds” attracting a lot of “likes” and “shares”, which is also spreading through Facebook Messages. A quick search on Google showed a list of blogs who stating that the above mentioned message is a scam and users should avoid clicking on it.

Users are also posting the following warning message on Facebook –

ATTENTION!!!

The hackers have already entered in Facebook and they are putting unwanted videos or pictures to your name in the walls or profiles of your friends without you knowing it. You dont see it,,but other people can see it. As if these were a publication that you made…so if you receive something from me about a video, ..its not mine..i wouldn’t disrespect my friends in anyway !copy this on your wall it is the security of our own image.

In the meantime, if you see any content which you think you might have not shared, then I recommended you to reset your Facebook password. Chances are that your account must be hacked. Alternatively, you can go through this guide that I wrote some time back which will guide you on how you can prevent your Facebook account from getting hacked.

We have compiled a list of Most Actively Spreading Scams on Facebook that you might want to have a look at. In addition to that, don’t forget to check out our article about Avoiding Facebook Likejacking and Clickjacking scams. Here’s an article on how you can Identify and Avoid Facebook scams.

Facebook Scam: 98 % of People Can’t Watch This Video for More Than 15 Seconds

A new scam is underway on Facebook which claims to show a video and assumes that 98 percent of users won’t be able to watch it for more than 25 seconds. The scam is spreading across the social network giant – Facebook with the following title – “98 Percent of People Can’t Watch This Video for More Than 15 Seconds” and a message that reads – “CLICK LINK TO WATCH VIDEO & SEE HOW LONG YOU CAN LAST!”

A scam that we reported earlier in June had a similar title – “99% People Can’t See This Video For More Than 25 Seconds Facebook Scam.”

This is a spam message that is spreading on Facebook with a link that leads to a bogus page upon click it, where you will notice a fake video player. You are asked to share the message before you can watch the video, after which you will be shown the following video -

Sometimes, after having shared the video, you will be redirected another spam website where you will be asked to complete a set of online surveys.

You can notice that the link has been shared more than 5,000 users, which itself indicates that the scam is rapidly spreading on Facebook. It is recommended that you DO NOT click on such links or scam messages on Facebook. If you come across this scam message, please delete/remove the scam from your Facebook news feed immediately. Alternately, you can report the scam to Facebook Security.

With over 800 million users on Facebook, the social networking giant has always been a main target for spreading scams. It is quite difficult to identify scams on Facebook. Here is a post on How to Identify and Avoid Facebook Scams.

As a precautionary measure, always check which applications you use and remove unwanted or suspicious ones. If you aren’t sure how to do it, you can always check our guide on removing apps from Facebook. Facebook to Put an End to Automated Notes – RSS/Feeds Import

The social networking giant Facebook announced in a message (posted above the timeline) that the feature which automatically allowed users to import content from their website/blog into their Facebook notes will no longer be functional from November 22 as the social networking giant is pretty much focused on creating Facebook Pages “even better.”

Facebook had already disabled this feature for Pages on 30th September -

We want you to connect with your fans in the most effective ways possible. That’s why as of September 30th you’ll no longer be able to automatically import posts from your website to your Page notes. The best way to get people to interact with your content is to give them insight into the links you share on your Wall by adding personal comments and responding to feedback from fans.

The automated notes allow users to link their blog posts and websites via RSS directly to their Facebook profiles. In other words, every time a user updates his blog, it would automatically “push” the information onto Facebook, marking it as a note.

Starting November 22nd, the feature will no longer be available. However, third-party syndication app providers, like NetworkedBlogs, Hootsuite and Tweetdeck remain as options for syndicating content automatically to Facebook.

Facebook also stated that they are “focused on creating better tools for Pages”. Now, how does this affect Google Plus? Well, Google can expect a fight back from Facebook to their newly launched Google Plus Pages, which allows organizations and companies to create a corporate (business) page on Google+, which is very much similar to the group and business pages you see on Facebook.

Having said that, and from what Mark Zuckerberg called Google’s social networking as “Google’s little version of Facebook“, I’m quite certain that Facebook would put forth great challenges by announcing some great new features in the coming days. Additionally, November 22nd could probably mark an official start of the Facebook’s newly launched TimeLine beta.

Is Affiliate Marketing better than Google Adsense? Why?

AdSense is a very popular and widely known PPC network. It is how Google makes most of its income. AdSense has proven to be one of the highest paying ad networks, therefore a lot of bloggers and webmasters have been attracted by AdSense over the past few years. However the biggest mistake (in my opinion) most of the bloggers and webmasters commit is when they make AdSense as their main source of revenue, leaving themselves at the mercy of Google.

Last month AdSense banned more than 90% of the Pakistani publishers, due to the massive amount of click frauds by Pakistani Bloggers, Only 10% of the bloggers were doing click fraud and as a result of this the rest of 80% suffered badly. I was also the victim of the ban. It was a huge shock to those who has kept AdSense as their major source of income.

Affiliate Marketing

This post is not solely about the comparison with AdSense and Affiliate Marketing, However this post is more targeted towards the importance of affiliate marketing. So What is Affiliate Marketing?
In simpler words an Affiliate Marketing means Cost per action, You earn an affiliate commission based on the action of the user. For Example: If a user completes a survey, You get a commission (Which b/w is known as Cost per lead, It's a type of affiliate marketing), If a user buys a product, You get a commission (Which is an example of traditional affiliate marketing.

SIX FIGURE BLOGGERS:

I have been closely analyzing the strategies of famous internet marketers and affiliate marketers such as John chow, ZacJohnson etc,  And most of their money is made by the combination of the two things, EMAIL MARKETING + AFFILIATE MARKETING. Let's take an example of ZacJohnson, He runs a blog zacjohnson, He makes SixFigure income by just Affiliate marketing, As a reason of which he is  widely known as Six Figure Affiliate Blogger.

Six Figure Bloggers Strategy:

Here is the strategy which almost every six figure affiliate bloggers use:
1. Choose A Target Audience.
2. Choose A Targeted Product.
3. Build An Email List with target audience.
4. Start Selling.
My Personal Opinion About AdSense Vs Affiliate Marketing:
"Choosing AdSense over affiliate marketing is just like trading dollars for pennies".

My Advice To Newbie Bloggers:

My advice to newbie bloggers is not restrict your self to only one source of income, Instead you create multiples sources of your income, So if one goes down, the other one is there to backup, In my upcoming guest posts, I will talk more about affiliate marketing and direct Ads, Types Of affiliate Marketing, Some Case Studies, Best affiliate marketing networks etc.
